Are Personal Digital Assistants the Next Must-Have Tool?

The Chronicle of Higher Education has this article reviewing the use of PDA's in college.

Significantly, the article questions the high cost of the best PDA's in relation to laptops. For example, the University of Minnesota at Duluth has required engineering students to purchase a PDA for $800 over a four semester period. Seems to me like a $1000 laptop, plus whatever specialized software is required, would be worth the difference in price.

What is unfortunate is that there aren't budget laptops out there for $700.
