This press release from AskOxford notes the changes in hyphen usage in our language:
For example, E-MAILS have become EMAILS and we are twice as likely to COOPERATE than CO-OPERATE. We are now ONLINE not ON-LINE.
Note also that among the new words/definitions added to the OED are some that might be of interest to Kairosnews readers:
- backstory
- blog
- bounce and bounce back (as in email, something we've all seen as of late with Sobig.f)
- CD-R and CD-RW
- DoS
- hacktivist
- Linux
- postmodern
- ringtone
- roaming (as in mobile phones)
- virtualize
- warchalking
- XHTML
