The first of the ultraportable Asus Eee PC's went on sale today at Newegg and a few other vendors. Honey Pot Hack Studios has put up an interactive version of the Eee PC's desktop menu system so that users can get a feel for the features. Makes me forget all about wanting an OLPC. I'd definitely go for one of these first.

OLPC alternative
Damn! You beat me to it.
The Asus Eee PC seems to be ready to ship. It is one of the as-yet vapor-ware cheap PC projects that have sprung up in the wake of the One Laptop per Child initiative. I've been following these developments, and while there are numerous advertisements for $400-$500 laptops, they seem to be limited in quantity and/or models that haven't been reviewed (or sold) well.
The Asus Eee PC is going to ship starting Nov 1, and at $399- is a real alternative version for inexpensive computing. As prices come down, it'll really put pressure on the OLPC project and pricing, and with its appearance at NewEgg and C-Net is moving beyond vaporware! This machine is designed to run Xubuntu and Web 2.0 apps, as is the $200- Walmart desktop.
Anyway, I thought this would make for interesting discussion, and now that it's November, we need something to keep us busy while we're waiting to place our OLPC orders :-)

OLPC is great because of the
OLPC is great because of the effect it will have on education in countries/organizations that broadly adopt it. But I predict the Eee PC may have a different affect on our culture since it's a more general consumer product. I could easily imagine the college freshman walking around with a phone, ipod, and an eee pc (or iphone instead of phone/ipod). The total mobile communication and information platform.
We'll have to see what Blakesley says about it once he gets his :-)

re: effect on culture
I agree, and it looks like it will fit nicely on the tray-table of a coach airline seat (something my 17-inch Satellite won't do), so I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the new PDA replacement for many traveling businesspeople and writers as well.
