Blackboard and Barnes & Noble/Nook Integration

Amazon and iPad better watch out:

Barnes & Noble continues to makes inroads into the education, um, space. It just announced that it has teamed up with Blackboard, the Web site/software suite that is used in colleges all over the U.S. (Lord knows I had to use it all the time.) The deal should ensure that college students, starting with the upcoming fall semester, have easy access to electronic textbooks. (Crunch Gear)

I'll have to test this out in the fall and see how/whether it integrates with the Nook.

Interesting Bed Partners

It makes a lot of sense, especially since B&N has taken over a lot of college bookstores. Something about it seems sinister somehow. Also interesting that they talk about literature classes, where students are usually forced to buy anthologies when they all need is one poem or short story. It'd be nice to see a better system for buying only what they need--or at least see the public domain alternatives for stuff out of copyright.

At any rate, we're using a clone called "Desire 2 Learn" here, though I'm frankly shocked more schools haven't switched to one of the free ones.

The Univ. of Minnesota is moving writing courses to Moodle. Maybe we will see iPad integration for Moodle or at least a Moodle "theme" that looks native on the iPad? I'd rather support Drupal, Moodle, etc, than Blackboard.

Not sure what the "integration" of a bookstore would look like, though. There are Drupal modules that add Amazon's API routines, so I suppose these could also be supported in Moodle.
