Via Boing Boing comes a story in the Rutland Herald (VT) about a high school that has banned blogging while at school "because blogging is not an educational use of school computers." It seems the Principal is concerned about the potential for students to reveal personal information on the Internet and thus put themselves in danger. This approach seems a bit short sighted. It would be better to talk with students about how to blog and how to protect their identity rather than banning it. That is, it would be far better for the school to take steps to help the students become critical uses of technology than to pretend that it doesn't exist or to pretend that a particular technology is inherently bad. I'm wondering how many other schools have "banned" blogging.

All blogging not banned
I emailed Chris Souza, the Proctor High principal, about this story. He's not against blogging, just this myspace.com site, which is likely not a good place for a 15-year old to be anyway.
I've posted at greater length on this on my own blog: http://faculty.deanza.fhda.edu/jocalo/05/04/05
