See also: Choosing a Blogging Package for Students
Quote: "I was recently commissioned with the task of selecting an appropriate blogging tool for our upcoming Intellectual Property Weblog class. Selecting blogging software is becoming increasingly tricky, in part because there are so many packages out there, and because so many of them are so good. All have been appending each other's features as time goes on, making their advantages progressively less distinct."
Charlie...saw this, thought of your upcoming blogging class...just in case you haven't seen it...

Re: Blogging for students
If you have server ability - go for movable type. If not, take Blogger or Web Crimson.
Userland was once free, but no longer. It also slows down some browsers.
I like Web Crimson better because there are no ads and its ftp system is very simple. Either one lets you host with them or on your own server.
There are also add ons out there - like commenting if the free service doesn't provide commenting.
Haloscan - http://www.haloscan.com/ - is pretty good. It's also free and easy to install in either Blogger or Web Crimson, or just if you want comments on a web page.
They gave you two snippets of code to copy and paste.
Blog away.

Funny - curious as to how the class is going, I was at your digital class earlier checking it out.
I see you got everyone up and running.
Soon as I settle into my new job, I'll look into installing postnuke. When I brought it up, no one had heard of it (and no one knows what blogging is either).
Maybe in the spring.
