While there is already widespread adoption of instance messaging by adolescents, one point in this New York Times article is that adults are also beginning to use IM to keep in touch with family and friends. I wonder to what extent this may be a filtering up process, where parents are adopting IM because there children are already using it?

Parents and Technology
My mom has always been a gadget guru of sorts. She buys the next big thing because she wants to be cutting edge and never uses it. Since I graduated and moved away from my home town she has finally learned to use the computer (email and IM) just to keep in touch. An offshoot of this is that she is finally learning other technologies as well. Being on the net she now sees what the other gadgets she has can actually do. She started using her ebook, digital camera, etc. because she reads about them online. Now if I can just get her to blog or start creating a monthly newsletter that'll be an accomplishment!

That's probably very true. My wife is not at all interested in technology, but she suggested that we get webcams for ourselves and the two sets of grandparents, so that our kids will grow up with a greater sense of knowing their grandparents.
