Copyright, IP, and the University

John Logie critiques this University of Delaware internet/copyright warning to students, faculty, and staff, pointing out that the RIAA and MPAA are listed at the very top of their list of copyright resources. Logie says he's "astonished that this obviously biased presentation of copyright made it through the university's institutional hoops." In a way, I am too, but then again, I also think something like this is, in part, a knee-jerk reaction to the effort to dissuade students from plagiarizing. I know we're talking about two different things--downloading songs and turning in work that the student didn't do himself/herself--but they both would seem to entail having a respect for the institution of copyright. As one of my professors at the University of Tennessee told me once, though, discouraging plagiarism isn't so much about getting students to bow before copyright law as it is about getting the student to take pride in his or her own voice and opinions. Many universities want to inculcate an unquestioning attitude toward copyright; they don't want to deal with finer distinctions such as the ones Logie points out about fair use.

university hoops

pretty one-sided look at ip presented here. but i'm not sure that this a "knee-jerk reaction" resulting from plagiarism. like the RIAA and MPAA, universities control and profit from the ip work of others, their faculty. why be surprised that institutional policy would side along those lines?

still, i'm disappointed at the message about ip. perhaps we should all email them with the nominate a resource you have found useful link on this page.

Mozilla

Not just you. I checked it out myself. The Blogger-generated ARCHIVE shows up as raw HTML in Mozilla, BUT you can see the cited post at : http://www.logie.net

I'll tackle the Mozilla/archive problem when time and space allow.

Best,

Logie
