Email lists of all types are so moderated (either by individuals or collectively by shared conventions) that it may be becoming hard for us to imagine an 'unruly' virtual community. This article from the Boston Globe details what happened when a glitch in the email system at Wesleyan University connected thousands of students in an unmoderated listserv. One MIT professor described the resulting dialogue thusly: "like a good-natured riot going through town."
