In an article titled "Anti-terrorism Effort Visits Libraries," MSNBC reports that FBI investigators are searching library reading records of people suspected of terrorist affiliation. This type of search was made legal in the Patriot Act of last fall. Yes, Big Brother is indeed watching us. Even scarier, though, is this bit:
"Libraries across the nation were reluctant to discuss their dealings with the FBI. The same law that makes the searches legal also makes it a criminal offense for librarians to reveal the details or extent of the contact."
So, not only will the FBI look at what is being read, the law attempts to suppress any sort of protest by silencing the librarians/administrators. The U.S. government seems to be poised to undermine one of our most important institutions for freedom of speech and access to knowledge. On the positive side, librarians are ready to resist:

I don't even want to try to imagine the amount of information the FBI is gathering on Americans via electronic databases, with their new, renewed J. Edgar Hoover-type enthusiasm.
Now, once the Homeland Security Agency is formed, and the government combine the data from the FBI, NSA, CIA, IRS--all the government agencies--then things will get really scary.
