This article from BBC News reports how scientists at Cambridge University are developing software that allows a user to type on a computer using his or her eye. The open source project, named Dasher, uses a constantly changing sidebar of letters and letter groupings that can be used to form words (currently, up to 25 words per minute). On the Dasher Project site, its designers explain the technique and imagine future integration with speech recognition software.
While the expected users of Dasher will of course include those unable to use keyboards, the article also mentions possible users such as those whose language has too many characters to fit on the miniature keyboards used on many hand-held devices. The possibilities for more traditional users seem interesting as well. The integration with speech recognition software would seemingly allow a user to write vocally or manually, while editing past sentences visually. Also, what of the uses of such technology in teaching literacy?
