Handheld computers help youngsters, researchers

An, ahem, very succinct blurb from CNN.com. Tell me if you don't think this passage is a little ambiguous:

For six weeks, the students spend part of their afternoon on campus working with Palms. They use the computers and take them home for free, and Kent State gets a look at how computers affect learning.

With spyware, or what? What is the approach? The implication seems to be that Kent State is going to put PDAs in the hands of these students and see what happens, kind of like student-led learning, which is a good idea, but how will they know what the students do with the PDAs?
