The New York Times. reports that the happy smiling face that has greeted Mac users during the start-up of their computers for the last 18 years is gone.

Now, with the release of the new OS X, the face is being replaced with an Apple logo at start up of the operating system. Apple afficionados attribute the change to a "refined aesthetics" of the company.
