This USA Today article, titled "'Yo, can u plz help me write English?'," harks back to this previous Kairosnews post. I wonder how much more of this we're going to see? Without bringing too much Chomsky into the discussion, do you think this IM-speak is changing the language? Do you think these students really think that "please" is spelled "plz"? Don't they read books?

Interesting that most of the academics quoted in the article didn't see much of a problem with IM speak, but parents and others were horrified. Perhaps it's representative of the division between the scholarly world and the "real" world.
