MIT's Technology Review has a short piece which points out that instant messaging was developed at MIT in 1987 and first used in 1988. Hard to believe it's become so popular in such a short time.

Re: I've Got to Get a Message to You
Heheh..I remember the /p page command for the old BBS boards. What fun! I always preferred chatting to instant messaging, though.
Of the popular instant messenger type proggies out there now, which do you like the best? I used ICQ back in Louisiana because of its geographical SEARCH feature. I could search for all the people in my area and chat with them. That way, if I met somebody I liked, I could easily setup a meeting. I notice that AOL and Yahoo lack this feature. This *really* bugs me.

IM is the best way to get around international long distance. True, you need a fairly decent microphone. But I've had nice chats with Europe for free using IM.
As far as the short time period, Charlie, we've been using the Web for even less time!
Re: I've Got to Get a Message to You
well, one could say that the web and email are the older siblings. arapanet was around in the early 1970s.
Re: I've Got to Get a Message to You
Actually - the web is more recent (Berners-Lee in the 90s). The basis of the Internet is from Aparanet.
Graphic browers are only from 92.
Re: I've Got to Get a Message to You
so you don't like non-graphical browsers?
