Kairos: Assistant and Advanced Assistant Editor Positions

Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy has two position announcements for the Topoi (i.e., feature) section: Assistant Editor(s) and Advanced Assistant Editor. Please see below for more information on both positions.

Position Announcement: Topoi Assistant Editor, Kairos

We have immediate openings for three qualified candidates for the position of Topoi Assistant Editor at Kairos, a refereed online journal exploring the intersections of rhetoric, technology, and pedagogy (http://kairos.technorhetoric.net). Topoi showcases webtexts, which are feature-length scholarly texts designed with the affordances of web media in mind and which address varied perspectives, occasionally on special topics or themes. Recently published webtexts have been on topics such as assessment practices of digital scholarship, the use of new media to understand the classical rhetoric, and issues of identity and community in online writing spaces.

Duties

The successful candidates will work with the Topoi editorial team to produce the spring and fall issues, as well as occasional summer issues. Duties include such tasks as:

  • Performing initial reviews of Topoi submissions for potential transmission to the Editorial Board.
  • Mentoring authors at developmental or revision stages of their projects.
  • Copy-editing, design-editing, and proofreading accepted webtexts collaboratively with the Topoi editorial team, and possibly corresponding with authors themselves.
  • Drafting author correspondence.
  • Uploading files to the Kairos server.

Required Skills

  • Basic familiarity with Kairos’ mission and scholarly vision.
  • Working knowledge of scholarly fields related to digital writing studies.
  • Functional knowledge/use of web editors (i.e., Dreamweaver), web architecture, FTP software, and basic XHTML/CSS.
  • Ability to correspond efficiently and accurately with other editors in several digital environments (use of email and IM preferred).
  • Willingness and ability to learn editing techniques and new technologies to accomplish editorial tasks.

Candidates who can demonstrate their experience in the above skills will be given priority.

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of design principles specific to online media.
  • Functional familiarity with image-editing programs.
  • Passing familiarity with new-media production technologies such as Flash, wikis, video-editing programs, etc.

Benefits

The benefits of working on Kairos include scholarly/professional editing experience in a digital environment, working closely with scholars in the field (through contact with editors and authors), creating a network of friends and colleagues who meet at conferences, and being the first to see the most up-to-date scholarship in the fields related to digital writing studies.

Although the production cycle workload varies, assistant editors will spend an average of 2-3 hours per week working for Kairos. We publish two regular issues a year (on August 15 and January 15); sometimes we have a third, special summer issue (on May 15). In keeping with those publication dates, our heaviest production months are typically June/July, November/December, and March/April. During these months, an assistant editor spends an average of 5+ hours per week working on Kairos.

These two-year positions (with possible renewal) report to Co-Editors Beth Hewett and Cheryl Ball. Positions are paid in gratitude and recognition in the field, a vita line, and letters from the editors for your job portfolio and/or tenure/promotion binders.

Position Announcement: Topoi Advanced Assistant Editor, Kairos

We have an immediate opening for one Advanced Assistant Editor for the Topoi section. We are looking for someone to help us manage the daily operations of the Topoi section; the responsibilities of this position will be tailored for the right person. This position carries with it the same duties, required/desired skills, and benefits as the Assistant Editor position(s), listed above, with the addition of the following:

  • managing input of and tracking submissions in the online database
  • overseeing the review and production workflow of submissions and accepted webtexts
  • helping to train new assistant editors in editorial processes
  • initiating and completing editorial projects for the section and journal

Required/Desired skills

  • ability to communicate excellently with colleagues, editors, and authors in an online environment required
  • ability to manage workload and work independently required
  • willingness to work on Kairos’ production cycle, including holidays and summer breaks, required
  • previous editorial experience desired (administrative or professional experience may substitute)
  • moderate to advanced knowledge of technologies related to webtext production desired

Benefits

In addition to the benefits listed for the assistant editor positions, the Advanced Assistant Editor (AAE) position has the potential benefits of working closely with the editorial review board, editors, and authors, which extends to a position of leadership in the section and the field.

Although the production cycle workload varies, the advanced assistant editor will spend an average of 7-10 hours per week working for Kairos. This AAE position is a two-year commitment (subject to renewal up to three years, with the possibility of a longer commitment) and reports to Co-Editors Beth Hewett and Cheryl Ball.
