Microsoft Right About Linux All Along?

This commentary from Zdnet claims that Microsoft was right about Linux all along--namely, that the OS would threaten Windows. Apparently businesses couldn't care less about intellectual property debates as long as they can get a good OS on the cheap. Microsoft is having to rethink key business strategies to stay on top as Linux rises to the top.

Gates says that the General Public License is "Pac-Man like," and his assistants call it an "intellectual property destroyer." Certainly open-source wares can threaten a monopolozing platform, especially when the monopolizing platform is riddled with gross errors and highly priced.

Re: Microsoft Right About Linux All Along?

As the article mentions, IBM's involvement here is partially responsible. What's funny is that IBM made Microsoft by giving them the exclusive license to create the operating system for the PC. Now they are working to unmake them by embracing Linux.

Sort of coming full circle, isn't it?

Imagine if IBM decided to fund Linux desktop development to use with an IBM user workstation line, and then buy out some application companies (Macromedia would be nice) so that they could release apps for Linux. Could be the next step, couldn't it?
