Minority Women Perceive IT as Way to Promised Land

Here's an article that brings up some interesting points. Donna Haraway and others have pointed out that technological narratives often are very similar to conquest narratives: that cyberspace is a riches-yielding frontier waiting to be staked out by rugged-individualistic entrepreneurs. That's really kind of the way it has played out, unfortunately, but I'm glad more women, especially women of color, are getting into IT, web design, blogging, etc. Lynette Kvasny, assistant professor of Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State, says that minority women with low income tend to characterize IT as a "promised land," while white middle-class women have a more skeptical view. Kvasny recommends that, when studying gender and technology, researchers should not lump all women into one category, but also take into consideration race, culture, and class.
