New file import and export in OpenOffice.org 1.1 Beta2

Found this in a Slashdot review of a Star Office 6.0 handbook (which, incidentally, sounds useful). I'm waiting for the stable version, but among other new features in OpenOffice 1.1 will be some very desirable import and export functions:

  • PDF (Portable Document Format) export
  • Support for mailing a document as PDF.
  • DocBook/XML import/export.
  • XHTML export.
  • Support for exporting as a flat XML file.
  • Support for Macromedia Flash (SWF) export.
  • Support for mobile device formats like AportisDoc (Palm), Pocket Word and Pocket Excel.

Can't wait to see how PDF and Flash work :)

The PDF export is nice and simple and works as expected. The Flash export is only for presentations though, and is still pretty crude. It basically takes a snapshot of every slide, shrinks the pictures down (not very readable), and creates a Flash swf file that you click to advance through each slide. But I'm sure it will improve.

The OpenOffice beta 2 is already very stable for me.

"The OpenOffice beta 2 is already very stable for me."

Great to hear. I was going to wait, but now I'm tempted to upgrade.
