This article from the Weekly Standard gives a short history of the SAT test following this announcement: the new SAT test to be adopted in March 2005 will include a new 50-60 minute writing test consisting of "multiple choice questions on grammar and usage and a handwritten essay." Proponents claim that the handwritten essay will "become an indispensable equalizer" by, for instance, reducing the influence of application essay ghost-writers. At the same time though, there may be a distinct advantage to native users of standard written English.
