I've heard that the soldiers of World War II were the Greatest Generation too.

you're 2-0 today. must be eatin' yer wheaties :)
Re: Only an eighth grade education?
I just wonder to what degree tests like this were standardized. Some of the questions here specifically address conditions in Kansas.
I've seen tests like this before too, but could we be looking here at an unrepresentative sample? the test of some proto-E.D. Hirsch?
Regardless, I think it's important to remember that it's only recently that all students are expected to pass with flying colors. I think this test sets a bar that assumes students won't know all and therefore we shouldn't assume that students typically knew everything on the test (what was a passing grade at that time anyway?).
Re: Only an eighth grade education?
One of my students collects (you won't believe this) old grammar books. Apparently she has quite a collection from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. Anyway, she was remarking in class the other day that the school system has become a LOT easier as time goes by. For instance, 3rd graders were once expected to know the names and conjugations of all verb forms (past perfect progressive, etc.) I don't know if it's been done already, but a serious dissertation-level study of this subject would greatly profit the field.
Re: Only an eighth grade education?
D'oh!! That came to me as an e-mail forward from a university administrator, and so I guess I thought it had some level of cred. :-o
Re: Only an eighth grade education?
