Position Announcement: [Academic Coordinator: Online Writing]

ACADEMIC COORDINATOR: ONLINE WRITING (full-time, DC-based)

SMARTHINKING, Inc. is a Washington D.C. based education organization providing online tutoring and learning services to high schools and colleges. We are seeking a full-time, D.C. based Online Writing Coordinator. SMARTHINKING provides 24-hour, daily writing support to students nationwide and internationally. The Coordinator is responsible for the strategic development and daily management of SMARTHINKING's online writing programs, to include selecting, training, and mentoring professional instructors who assist students in both asynchronous and synchronous writing environments.

The Coordinator has the following responsibilities, as well as others that will develop as the company grows: direct the strategic development of SMARTHINKING's online writing programs and the building of various new programs (e.g., English for speakers of other languages [ESOL], creative, and business/technical writing). In a start-up environment, recruit and select professional writing instructors and writing consultants. Train and orient instructors to SMARTHINKING's writing philosophy and technology. Develop training materials for both synchronous and asynchronous tutorials. Develop outcomes and assessment tools. Develop training materials, train, and provide consultancy to non-SMARTHINKING writing instructors, such as those from outside institutions that have business relationships with SMARTHINKING. Build collaborative teams where lead instructors train, evaluate, and mentor nonlead instructors. Research, develop, and implement professional growth activities for online teams. Engage in research and scholarly presentations that address writing theory/practice and online writing instruction. Develop genre- and level-specific interactive learning modules for native and ESOL students, as well as instructional materials for tutors. Develop a writer's gallery for showcasing and modeling strong student writing. Regularly communicate with academicians in rhetoric, composition, and learning support.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in rhetoric/composition, English studies, or a similar field. S/he will have had experience with composition direction, training and/or professional development of instructors, online writing, and administration. A willingness to work in a flexible, fast-paced start-up environment is a must.
