Slashdot - the Model for Internet Publishing?

This article in the NY Times discusses Slashdot as a model for Internet publishing, and discusses its community/fan base as well as Slashdot "profits". NY Times author John Schwartz asks: "Could it be that this is the 21st-century model for Internet publishing?"

Interesting that they don't point out that Slashdot is essentially a higly moderated--from the point of view of submissions--community weblog. In fact, unless I missed it, the words "blog" and "weblog" don't appear in the text at all???

Re: Slashdot - the Model for Internet Publishing?

You made a similar comment in a previous article. I'm not one to split hairs, but there does seem to be a difference between the, as you say, highly-moderated Slashdot, community/news blogs like this one, and personal blogs. I'm not sure what the difference is, exactly, but maybe it has to do with how Slashdot discusses Slashdot: see, for example, the about page and the about Slashdot page of the Slashdot FAQ. While there is some emphasis on the community of users/readers/posters, there's also a lot of emphasis on the creators/owners of Slashdot - the overall effect may be that people percieve Slashdot as less of a community blog and more of a web publishing venue run primarily by a handful of people (maybe?).

Re: Slashdot - the Model for Internet Publishing?

certainly, there is a difference between slashdot and a personal blog site, as well as some differences between slashdot and some of other community weblogs. but earlier, slashdot had more of a community blog feel. i've been reading it off and on for almost three years, and as it became more commercialized, community interaction has shifted away from the blog posts completely to the comment boards. in the last year or so, i've noticed that editors seem to be doing all the posting, not, as with kairosnews, because slashdot isn't receiving submissions, but rather because it seems that they have decided not to post reader submissions for whatever reason.

Re: Slashdot - the Model for Internet Publishing?

Right, I agree there's a difference, I was tring to set up some kind of interactivity/control continuum, I think, and didn't follow through. Anyway, amybe you hit the nail on the head: Slashdot got bought out by OSDN, had become more commercialized, got attached to a marketing dept. that released the Slashdot PT Cruiser, and the "community" goes out the window.

In which case, slashdot is really not a blog of any sotr any more, which might explain why it's not discussed as a blog.
