And you thought spam was bad. Wired reports on a new IE toolbar, Xupiter, which likes to self-install and resists removal. Additionally,
The program attempts to download updates each time an affected computer boots up, and has been blamed for causing system crashes. Several versions of Xupiter also appear to download other programs, such as gambling games, which later appear in pop-up windows.
So, it might be a good idea to stay away from xupiter.com:
"Xupiter is the worst thing I've ever personally encountered on the Internet," said Ed Olexa. "You only realize that is has been installed when you start your browser and see that Xupiter's search page is now your homepage.

Re: Sneaky Toolbar Hijacks Browsers
I figured it was safe to visit xupiter.com in linux using konquerer. It looks like your basic personalized search engine wanna be with a list of yahoo like categories on the main page.
Nothing anyone would really want here :)
Re: Sneaky Toolbar Hijacks Browsers
I've been using a networked computer in one of my classrooms this semester that suffers from a wide variety of ills like these. Apparently the teachers or students who use the machine pretty much click all those "Trust everything from X Company" boxes that appear from time to time. I cant' open an explorer window without fifteen or so popups appearing on the screen. I managed to remove the commercial toolbars, but they just reappear the next day. I've tried ad-aware, which helped, but I need something even more powerful.
I know...I could put linux on the machine lol.
Re: Sneaky Toolbar Hijacks Browsers
not linux. i administer our computer classrooms. i put mozilla 1.1 on all of them and turned off the popup ads.
some students like ie, but others have enjoyed the tabbed browsing and lack of ads. meanwhile, i only use mozilla on our main media console.
you might see what it would take to get mozilla installed.
