Study urges colleges to tighten focus on teaching high-demand job skills

Many community colleges are adopting a new model: find out what is in demand in that particular region of the country, and beef up those programs. I know we don't talk about 2-year vs. 4-year colleges much on Kairosnews--I picked this article because it points out that Information Technology is experiencing a downturn in popularity, but Computer Security and Computer Forensics are in high demand. Can anyone think of any ways that composition and technical communication teachers can create assignments that bring in elements of those fields?

Oh, and has anyone seen that TV show Forensic Files? How cool is that?

One problem that I've noticed is that administration is slow, but life is fast. It takes years to implement changes in programs, and then the world has changed and you are left to teach crappy, irrelevant classes. I'm thinking specifically about Technical Writing/Communicatino programs.

Yeah, the schools in these articles are putting hundreds of thousands of dollars into building these programs when they know the demand for employees in these fields will be temporary--10 years, for example. I guess it's worth it; I'm sure they've done cost/benefit analysis.
