The current native solution, NeoOffice, is still much more robust and stable, but OpenOffice.org is making clear strides into a native OS X port.

Jobs and Gates Talk Shop

in apple, interviews, microsoft

I stumbled across this interview with Jobs and Gates today and found it great morning reading. It's a bit on the "we're getting along like two guys just back from their daily massage and frappy mocha at the lodge" kind of vibe to it, but it's still neat to catch the deft spins at work here. Novell, Microsoft, and File Format Standards

in apple, microsoft, novell, openoffice, xml

News regarding file formats for this week:

  • Novell has agreed to produce a translator for Microsoft's Office Open File Format. Apparently, the translation program will go into Novell's branded version of OpenOffice and be submitted back to the OpenOffice.org community for inclusion in the version available for download. Despite Groklaw's negative take on this news, I see this as very promising for OpenOffice. While I would of course prefer to see ODF supported in MS Office, clean conversions of MS Office Open XML can only help the propagation of OpenOffice.

OpenOffice to be 'true' Mac application

in apple, openoffice

I've got a PowerMac G5 in my office now, so this is great news. MacWorld reports that the Aqua port of OpenOffice is soon to be released. Now Mac users will have little need to run any MS products on their machines.
