How do students and teachers get access to the materials they need?

in open content

In an article for First Monday, Derek Keats discusses problems with access to course content materials for students in Africa. Texts are too expensive, often unavailable, and even irrelevant for many African students. The situation in the U.S. and Europe is perhaps different only in degree. Students sometimes decide to "make do" without textbooks, and teachers are reluctant even to assign books they believe their students might not purchase.

Welcome to Open Anarchy or Closed Dictatorship!

in open content

Today, Kairosnews is the site of an exciting new concept: a session of the Computers and Writing Online 2003 conference. Today's session, Open Anarchy or Closed Dictatorship: Methods of Producing Collaborative Teaching Texts, is moderated by Dave Munger, aka wordmunger on Kairosnews. I'll be posting entries like this one throughout the day, with links to relevant sites that should serve as the basis for discussion of the many complex issues surrounding the collaborative creation of teaching texts.

Tomorrow is the C&W Online Session on Kairosnews

in open content

As you may know, tomorrow, Dave Munger will be hosting a session of C&W 2003 Online on Kairosnews which will examine issues of publishing open content. Beginning tomorrow morning, Dave will be blogging discussion points throughout the day and everyone is encouraged to join in.

Hope this will be an active session in which we can explore some/all of our ideas about open content.

For those new to Kairosnews, I've posted some instructions (see notice about the session in the right menu on the Kairosnews home page or click here).

Open Anarchy: Companion site is up

in open content

I've prepared a companion site for the Computers and Writing Online session that will be hosted on Kairosnews next week. I've listed several possible topics for discussion, but I'd appreciate suggestions for additional ones! Also, please note the debut of Kairosnews' new Open Content topic, accompanied by the Commontext logo. Thanks, Charlie!

Copyright and creativity survey

in open content

I'm conducting a survey to support my presentation at CCCC next month. I hope to uncover some of the attitudes about publication of teaching materials in the world of rhetoric and composition, particularly as they relate to copyright and the open-source movement.

The survey's home is here.
