Using Ning in the Classroom

in ning, social media, social networking, web_2.0

I guess it's about time I reported on my experience using Ning in my English 403/503 class (Digital Rhetoric). We've been using it to make social networking sites, and some of them are really coming along. Check it out! I'm going to make a presentation at GPACW about the project, but you can see for yourself. I believe Kairosnews readers might be particularly interested in Freeware Chronicles, Comics Scholarship, and Fan Fiction Unlimited, though I like them all. Of course, these students could use some extra members, so pass the word along if you would. :P

I hadn't heard hardly anything about these before reading the article, and one is even made by Adobe (Buzzword). One called Zoho even gives you a personal wiki!

Howard Rheingold Starts a "Social Classroom"

in learning, Rheingold, teaching, web_2.0

Read/Write/Web reports on Rheingold's new project--the "Social Classroom." According to the story, it is "an open-source Drupal-based web service to teachers and students for the purpose of introducing social media into the classroom."

So, is this anything more that a Drupal distribution designed for learning and teaching? I think a lot of us who use Drupal-based sites already do that stuff. Perhaps I am missing something.

New Online Application: Flowgram

in applications, elearning, web_2.0

Abhay Parekh recently launched a new application, Flowgram, that those in the computers and writing crowd may want to check out. Think of it as Powerpoint-plus. An online screencasting program, Flowgram enables you to load URLs, images, and Powerpoints onto the web, to add layered audio, notes, and highlighting, and then to play the pages or to share them.
