The Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Georgia Southern invites nominations and applications for the position of tenure-track assistant professor of creative nonfiction. Georgia Southern University, a member institution of the University System of Georgia, is the largest and most comprehensive center of higher education in the southern half of the state. Founded in 1906, the University offers 120 degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels through seven colleges. The 675-acre campus is located in Statesboro, a community of approximately 30,000 residents, 50 miles northwest of historic Savannah and 200 miles southeast of Atlanta.
Reporting to the chair of the Writing and Linguistics Department, the successful candidate will teach both undergraduate and graduate students in creative nonfiction, introductory creative writing (including poetry and fiction writing) and first-year composition. The typical teaching load for tenure and tenure-track faculty is seven courses per year, either 4/3 or 3/4. The position is a 9-month appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
An MFA in Creative Writing or a Ph.D. with creative dissertation is required by August 1, 2006, the starting date for the position. Additional requirements include publications in one or more kinds of nonfiction prose writing (e.g., literary journalism, scientific writing, memoir, historical writing, OR essay writing) as well as training or experience in analyzing form, style, and contexts of nonfiction prose. Experience teaching with technology is required, as is evidence of excellence in teaching.
Preference may be given to candidates with extensive experience using computer technology in creative writing venues such as on-line journals, hypertext fiction, and/or multimedia authoring. A minimum of two years of college teaching experience is preferred. Preference may be given to candidates with experience working with diverse student populations.
