Trackback Spam on Kairosnews

01 Feb in blog & cms, kairosnews

Kairosnews was massively spammed via trackbacks (over 200), so I've disabled the trackback module for the moment. Looks like trackbacks are going to be useless without some sort of blacklist function.

Deleting trackbacks

Didn't Drupal used to allow us to delete trackbacks manually, once upon a time? I'm not seeing any way to do it now.

deleting trackbacks

Well, it allows the deleting of comments, so when trackbacks were treated as comments, yes. But no longer.

However, judging by the amount of trackback spam Kairosnews got, that would be futile.

re: deleting trackbacks

Wordpress treats them like comments, so I can go into mass-edit mode and flag every post with "poker" or "breast enlargement." No problem to delete even hundreds of trackbacks.

But trackback spam is definitely going to start making bloggers' lives miserable. Trackback is such a cool idea, I'd hate to see it bite the dust. What's next? Technorati spam?

trackbacks and RSS advertisting

Drupal used to store trackbacks as comments, but they moved away from that in the latest version.

As for what's next, advertising images in RSS. Imagine commercial sites, or those who are looking to make a buck off their weblog, adding a google ad image or some such other thing automatically appendded to the end of their RSS items. Sounds great for advertisers, bad for RSS readers.
