The Department of Writing and Linguistics is pleased to offer a tenure track position at the assistant professor level. The Professional and Technical Writing component of the BA in Writing and Linguistics is growing exponentially with the addition of P&T Writing to the online Bachelor of General Studies degree. We are currently planning a graduate certificate in P&T Writing, and our department will begin planning other graduate programs this year.

The Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Professional and Technical Writing. Georgia Southern University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities. A residential university serving more than 20,000 students in fall 2010, Georgia Southern is recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major university with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the University offers more than 100 campus-based and online degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The nearly 700 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

Within this setting, the Department of Writing and Linguistics—comprised of Creative Writing, Professional and Technical Writing, Linguistics, and Writing Studies—offers the Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Linguistics and is responsible for the delivery of First-Year Writing. The Department offers a minor in Technical Writing and a second discipline concentration in Technical Writing for students in the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program. The Department is an active participant in the Online Bachelor of General Studies program housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and is in the process of developing an online graduate certificate in Professional and Technical Writing. The Department is home to the University Writing Center and the Georgia Southern Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project. The Department hosts the annual Student Success in Writing Conference and co-hosts the Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy. The ideal candidate will contribute to the growth and development of the Professional and Technical Writing area, the online Bachelor of General Studies program, along with other Department programs and activities.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Writing and Linguistics, the Assistant Professor of Professional and Technical Writing position requires teaching, service, and research responsibilities and a terminal degree. The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester with primary assignment in Professional and Technical Writing. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in Technical, Professional, or Scientific Writing, or a closely related field by August 1, 2012
• Scholarly agenda in the area of Technical, Professional, or Scientific Writing or closely related field
• Experience teaching with technology
• Evidence of excellence in teaching

Preferred Qualifications:
• Peer-reviewed publications in Technical, Professional, or Scientific Writing
• At least one year of full-time teaching experience
• Experience developing and teaching online courses and programs
• Interest or experience in writing grants
