The Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Writing and Linguistics with a specialization in Professional and Technical Writing.  Georgia Southern University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities. A residential university serving more than 20,000 students, Georgia Southern is recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major university with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the University offers more than 100 campus-based and online degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The more than 700 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

Within this setting, the Department of Writing and Linguistics—comprised of Creative Writing, Professional and Technical Writing, Linguistics, and Writing Studies—offers the Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Linguistics and is responsible for the delivery of First-Year Writing. The Department offers a minor in Technical Writing and a second discipline concentration in Technical Writing for students in the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program. The Department is alsoan active participant in the Online Bachelor of General Studies program housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and is working toward an online graduate certificate in Professional and Technical Writing. Writing and Linguistics is home to the University Writing Center and the Georgia Southern Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project. The Department hosts the annual Student Success in Writing Conference and co-hosts the Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy.  In 2012, the Department hosted the international Writing Across the Curriculum Conference and in 2013 will host the annual conference of the Council of Writing Program Administrators. The ideal candidate will contribute to the growth and development of the Professional and Technical Writing area, the online Bachelor of General Studies program, along with other Department programs and activities.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Writing and Linguistics, the Assistant Professor of Writing and Linguistics position requires teaching, service, and research responsibilities as well as a terminal degree. The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester with the primary teaching assignment in the area of Professional and Technical Writing.Teaching and research tracks are available at the faculty’s discretion.Faculty should accommodate their activities to facilitate promotion. All faculty hired at the rank of assistant professor are expected to advise undergraduate Writing and Linguistics majors as well as serve on departmental, college, and university committees as part of their service to the institution.The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

•Doctorate in Technical, Professional, or Scientific Writing; Rhetoric and Composition; or relevant terminal degree, by August 1, 2013

•Scholarly agenda in the area of Technical, Professional, or Scientific Writing or closely related field

•At least one full-year of at least part-time college-level  teaching (graduate assistant teaching experience is permissible)

Preferred Qualifications:

•Evidence of demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level or two or more years of college-level teaching

•Peer-reviewed publications in Technical, Professional, or Scientific Writing or other relevant fields

•Experience developing and teaching online courses and programs

•Interest or experience in writing grants or relevant consulting

•Relevant professional experience supporting the degree
