Zotero: Say Goodbye to Endnote?

Have you ever heard of Zotero? If not, maybe it's time you did. Zotero is a free Firefox extension that promises to implement much of the functionality of expensive bibliography software like Endnote and Refworks right in your browser. Read up on the extension here at Linux.com and consider giving it a whirl. You can keep track of citations online or off, and even tag things for quick and easy retrieval. From what I can see, this will quickly become a must-have FF extension for anyone doing serious research on the web.

Good to see open source software like this being developed by academics:

Zotero is a production of the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. It is generously funded by the United States Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

I'll have to give it a try. Thanks, Matt.

Doesn't do webpages?

Hmm...Well, it is a beta release, but I'm noticing that Zotero works very well for print materials but doesn't seem to work right for most web pages. The problem is that they're not showing up when you select them and try to create a bibliography. Apparently, this is a "known issue" that will be fixed in the update, so here's hoping. (I'm not surprised, really, since citing electronic sources has been a bugbear ever since the web was invented!)
